“I first heard about Stahili when I met one of the co-founders, Michelle Oliel, and heard about the incredible work she and her two co-founders, Laura Walker and Hannah Ackerman, had done to rescue children from an appalling situation in an orphanage in Kenya and put them on the road to a better future through education. It was a powerful story which stands out for its bravery, determination and commitment – not to mention the vision that has ultimately led to Stahili. I was also moved to read the powerful personal story by Laura on how and why Stahili began. This convinced me to not only volunteer for the organisation but also support one of the children in a practical way.
As a ‘builder’, I sponsor one of the children currently supported by Stahili in one region of rural Kenya. My donation works out at about 60 Euros per month. That money guarantees full-time education for a child in Kenya who otherwise would have few opportunities to reach their potential and succeed.
The concept of a ‘builder’ is crucial to Stahili’s vision and one of the reasons why I support the organisation. Most of the children supported by Stahili are orphans from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds, often the victims of abuse and forced labour. Despite their young ages, the children have already had to face difficult challenges. Investing in the children’s education now means building capacity for the future whilst at the same time safeguarding them from further harm in stable and supportive environments where they maintain contact with their home communities. This investment is ultimately about breaking long-term cycles of poverty and neglect through education and opportunity.
I choose to donate to cover the full costs of one child’s education. However, Stahili makes available various options to suit all choices. You can become a builder from as little as $10 per month or participate with others. Why not consider joining me as a builder or team up with others in your family, workplace or community to support Stahili? You can read more about the builder options on the web site here: Become a Builder.
